Western Europe reported sending arms aid to Iran

March 9, 1982

Iran is receiving military aid from Western Europe as well as from Israel, North Korea, Syria, Libya, and the USSR, Western sources told the New York Times. Over the past 18 months $100 million to $200 million in arms and ammunition reportedly were delivered from Western Europe to Iran for use in its war with Iraq, the story said.

The report indicates Israel may be involved in the transfer of nearly half the Western shipments to Iran. Reports of Israeli involvement in arms shipments to Iran have circulated for some time, but the extent of Israeli involvement was not known.
