Congressman 'misquoted' on lifting Polish sanctions

March 8, 1982

Sources close to a US congressional delegation to Poland said Congressman David Obey (D) of Oklahoma, who headed the group, was misquoted by the official Polish news agency PAP.

Mr. Obey was quoted as saying: ''Although it could be a difficult task, we would like to convince our government about the need to lift sanctions against Poland.''

But the sources said, ''In fact, Mr. Obey said it would be very difficult in the present circumstances to convince the American government to lift the sanctions,'' the sources explained.

Meanwhile, other US sources disclosed the Air Force plane which brought the seven-man delegation to Poland was broken into at a Warsaw airport. There was no evidence of damage.
