TVA halts work on 3 more planned nuclear reactors

March 5, 1982

The Tennessee Valley Authority voted to halt work on three nuclear reactors in Tennessee and Mississippi, further trimming the nation's largest atomic-construction program. The decision whittles the nation's largest nuclear construction program to nine units. Five reactors have already been deferred.

TVA directors said savings to consumers of $8.2 billion over the next 10 years outweigh the loss of about 4,000 jobs that will result from the deferrals.
