Monhegan Island to get link with mainland again

This tiny island is on the verge of renewing its links to the rest of the world. An Monitor article in October detailed how residents were fighting to recover phone service after a hurricane cut the island's telephone cable to the mainland in September.

The US Coast Guard refused to fix the old line, leaving Monhegan with only a single radiotelephone. But now, pending approval by the Federal Communications Commission, staff writer Laurent Belsie reports the telephone company has agreed to set up a microwave system by May 1983. The only catch to the happy ending is that islanders will have to pay a one-time $300 fee for restored service.
