CIA: Qaddafi wounded in December shooting

March 1, 1982

The CIA has confirmed reports that Libyan leader Moammar Qaddafi was slightly wounded in an assassination attempt two months ago, the Washington Post reported.

The report said the assassination attempt was carried out by some members of Qaddafi's army. There is no evidence the plotters received any external support from any foreign country, the newpaper said. Quoting a ''well placed source,'' the newspaper said US intelligence has had information for several months that Israel would like to see Qaddafi killed.

Foreign news reports of the incident, initially dismissed in Washington last month, said the assassination attempt occured Dec. 19 and that an eastern area army commander was killed by Qaddafi's bodyguards during the attempt. Qaddafi's driver was reported killed in the shooting.
