Maturing Savings Bonds

February 24, 1982

We have Series E government bonds which will be 40 years old on the first of March. Will these bonds continue drawing interest after March 1? -E.L.

No. Starting last year, all Savings Bonds stopped earning interest after 40 years. Thus, your bonds will no longer be earning interest when they reach their 40th birthday on March 1. You do not have to cash them in on that date, but you probably should so you can put the money in an interest-bearing account or invest it.
