Canada joins in placing curbs against Warsaw

February 24, 1982

Canada, joining the ranks of Western countries imposing sanctions against Poland, announced it will not extend new commercial credits to the martial-law government for goods other than food.

Canadian External Affairs Minister Mark MacGuigan, in a statement, said Canada would support a delay in talks on rescheduling repayments of Polish debts due this year. The announcement also outlined a series of diplomatic measures against Poland and the Soviet Union, including limiting their airlines' flights to Canada to the present two a week.

At the same time, European Common Market governments agreed to impose import restrictions on luxury goods from the Soviet Union, Dutch Foreign Minister Max Van der Stoel said.

The products affected will include goods such as cars, diamonds, and cameras.
