West German party backs US missiles in Europe

The West Berlin Social Democratic Party (SPD), in one of a series of regional party conferences, overwhelmingly rejected by a left-wing resolution demanding a moratorium on the stationing of US medium-range nuclear weapons in Europe.

The vote was a boost to West German Chancellor Helmut Schmidt, who has staked his career on fulfillment of the NATO plan to deploy new US missiles while conducting arms reduction talks with Moscow.
