All the news that's fit to eat

February 19, 1982

When show biz's Billy Rose started a newspaper column, he claimed a certain perspective from knowing that the next day someone would wrap fish in it. He should have heard this week's reports about old newspapers and magazines being fed to cattle. At least it's nice to know we're a good source of carbohydrates.

But wait, the reports say the diners gobble up slick magazines while taking their time over journals such as The Christian Science Monitor. Funny, we have always tried to make our pages digestible. But when the consumer is literally a ruminant (cud chewer) we can hardly complain about a little extra rumination. Ruminative readers have been chewing us over - and sometimes out - for years.
