Druze strike continues in Golan Heights protest

February 18, 1982

A general strike by Druze on the recently annexed Golan Heights continued for the fourth day Wednesday, in protest against the detention of four community leaders for incitement against Israel.

Stores and schools stayed closed, and most of the 13,000-strong sect, an offshoot of Islam, stayed home. Druze religious leaders have called on their people to strike until the four leaders are freed and Israel rescinds its annexation of the heights last December.
