Two top Arab hard-liners plan meeting on Golan

February 17, 1982

Two leading Arab hard-liners, Syrian President Hafez al-Assad and Libya's Col. Muammar al-Qaddafi, will hold a meeting in the near future, the official Syrian press reported Wednesday.

Newspapers said the meeting was agreed upon in a telephone conversation between the two leaders. Diplomats said a major theme of the phone contact was probably Syria's diplomatic campaign against the United States and Israel after Israel's annexation of the Israeli-occupied Syrian Golan Heights in December.
