One sign of moves by moderates to check Iran: Egypt has sent Iraq three packages of arms and ammunition, and a fourth will be shipped next month.

The third shipment, made last month, contained heavy war equipment manufactured in Egypt, as well as foreign -- but not Soviet-made -- arms and ammunition. It is believed to have significantly helped the Iraqis, who suffered severe setbacks in their war with Iran last fall.

Some Egyptians living in Iraq are believed to have joined the Iraqi Army. And some Egyptian reserve officers also have been hired by Iraq as military advisers.
