Marco's son-in-law freed from rebels in Philippines

February 10, 1982

Tommy Manotoc, the athlete who secretly married the daughter of Philippines President Ferdinand Marcos, was rescued six weeks after his kidnapping. The abduction was a major embarrassment for President Marcos because of widespread speculation that he might have been behind the abduction.

At a press conference Mr. Manotoc, who married Imee Marcos in the United States Dec. 29, said his kidnappers identified themselves as members of the Communist New People's Army.

The President opposed his daughter's marriage to Manotoc, a divorced basketball coach and amateur boxer.
