Plan for new limits angers South African journalists

South African journalists are angered over what many regard as the gravest threat to press freedom in the country's history.

Legislation before the Parliament calls for compulsory registration of journalists and heavy penalties for breaches of a detailed code of press conduct.

Some journalists say forced registration could stifle reports critical of the government because correspondents would fear having their registration revoked.
