Peking answer on Poland: trade instead of sanctions

China took a stand on the Polish military crackdown - spurning US appeals for sanctions and increasing trade with Poland 30 percent - diplomats said Monday.

China maintained a noncommittal attitude toward President Reagan's call for sanctions against Poland until it signed a 1982 trade protocol with Warsaw Friday boosting trade to $140 million.

China will provide foodstuffs, textiles, and consumer items in exchange for Poland's chemicals, steel products, and raw materials, an East European diplomat said.
