Warning by Peking halted F-16 sale, US official says Washington

January 28, 1982

Deputy Secretary of State-designate Walter Stoessel said the United States called off the sale of advanced F-16 jet fighters to Taiwan because of ''a real danger of rupture'' in US-China relations.

His statement to the Senate Foreign Relations Committee was the first acknowledgment by an administration official that the sale was refused in direct response to Chinese demands that all US arms sales to Taiwan be halted.
