Nuclear-free vote a setback for Schmidt

January 25, 1982

West German Chancellor Helmut Schmidt received a political setback this weekend when a local Social Democratic party organization voted over his objections in favor of establishing a nuclear weapons-free zone in Europe.

Mr. Schmidt has supported NATO plans to deploy nuclear missiles in Europe as necessary for leverage in disarmament talks with the Soviet Union.

The vote was passed by a large majority at a regional party convention in Hamburg.
