UN team probing coup unsure about South Africa

January 25, 1982

A United Nations team investigating last year's foiled coup in the Indian Ocean island state of the Seychelles arrived here undecided about whether to visit South Africa, where 45 mercenaries alleged to be involved face charges of hijacking.

The commission's chairman, Carlos Ozores Typaldos of Panama, said Pretoria had responded ambiguously to his request for permission to pursue the investigation in South Africa.
