Icy cold expected to hike food bills

If you've braved January's cold and snow to stock up on groceries, take note: you may find that the widespread harsh weather will temporarily raise your food bill for fruits, vegetables and meat.

The snow across the country will provide helpful soil moisture and ensure against a drought. But in the short run expect higher prices for eggs and chicken, and for fruits and vegetables, because of the effect of freezing temperatures on vulnerable crops and livestock.
