A white member of the Zimbabwe Parliament, detained on suspicion of plotting a coup, had been tortured while in solitary confinement, alleged former Prime Minister Ian Smith.

Speaking in Parliament, Mr. Smith complained that Wally Stuttaford, a member of his Republican Front Party who was detained under emergency powers last month , had been held incommunicado for 30 days.
