Mobil back to high court to halt Marathon takeover

January 6, 1982

Mobil Oil Corporation returned to the US Supreme Court for one last try at blocking US Steel, a rival bidder, from buying up Marathon Oil Corporation stock on Thursday.

Mobil attorneys rushed an emergency request to Chief Justice Warren Burger less than 24 hours after a federal appeals court refused the oil giant's request to halt the acquisition temporarily while it petitions the justices for a full-blown review of the dispute.

The Sixth US Circuit Court of Appeals in Cincinnati rejected the Mobil request, clearing the way for the return to the high court.
