US urged to open borders to refugee Poles

December 30, 1981

The US could help Polish refugees better by accepting more of them as immigrants than by shipping relief supplies to Austria, said Austrian Chancellor Bruno Kreisky.

In announcing a series of actions last week to protest the military takeover in Warsaw, President Reagan said the US would divert aid shipments destined for Poland to Austria, which supports the largest number of Polish refugees.

The US quota for accepting political refugees from Poland is 6,000 people for 1981. Only about 1,500 people have been granted approval to immigrate under that program, which requires proof that applicants have been victimized because of their political convictions, US officials said.econd half of story is in BF301.
