US, Italy: no negotiations with Red Brigades

December 30, 1981

The US and Italy will not negotiate in any way with the Red Brigades terrorists who kidnapped US Army Brig. Gen. James L. Dozier, Prime Minister Giovanni Spadolini said Tuesday.

Meanwhile, police studied a Red Brigades photograph of General Dozier to determine if it was genuine, and investigators said there was evidence that General Dozier, a Vietnam veteran trained to resist interrogation, was refusing to cooperate with his captors.

The clues developed as authorities in Verona, where Dozier was kidnapped Dec. 17, offered a $833,000 reward for information leading to his release.

The prime minister also confirmed that intelligence agencies from several nations, including the US and West Germany, were helping in the case.
