Reagan said to consider tax on imported oil

December 29, 1981

The Reagan administration is considering a tax on imported oil that could increase the price of refined oil by 10 to 12 cents a gallon, Energy User News says.

The import tax is among several items on a list of possible measures drawn up by the US Treasury as a way of cutting the budget deficit.

The publication said there was congressional opposition to the proposal and noted that Congress rejected such a tax when President Carter proposed it in 1980.
