Uses for fresh grapefruit

December 24, 1981

Refreshing grapefruit can fit into family meals at any time of the day. This is a particularly good time to try them in traditional, as well as unusual, ways because they are now in plentiful supply.

Try broiled grapefruit halves. Sprinkle each half with 1 tablespoon of sugar and a dash of cinnamon or nutmeg. Dot sparingly with butter. Place in broiler three inches from heat. Broil slowly, 15 to 20 minutes, or until grapefruit is lightly browned and heated through.

For lunch or a light snack, fresh grapefruit can be used in combination with a variety of other fruits and vegetables. Make a Florida cole slaw by combining red and green cabbage, grapefruit, and a slaw dressing. Or, on a bed of greens, arrange a fan of grapefruit and apple sections; garnish with halved grapes. Add grapefruit sections to slightly thickened lime gelatin.

For dinner, try a simple broiled fish dish. When nearly done, add grapefruit to pan, brush with melted butter and brown lightly.
