Begin expected to survive opposition party assault

December 23, 1981

Israel's opposition Labor Party rallied forces for a parliamentary assault on Prime Minister Menachem Begin's government, but party leaders admitted they had virtually no chance of success.

The attack will be pressed Wednesday in a no-confidence motion in the Begin government because of the damage caused to Israeli-American relations by last week's annexation of the Golan Heights. But Mr. Begin is expected to muster enough support in his 61-member ruling coalition to defeat the motion.
