Nine Nobel laureates wire Brezhnev about Sakharov

December 11, 1981

Nine of this year's 10 Nobel prizewinners who were presented with their $200, 000 awards here Thursday sent a telegram to Soviet President Leonid Brezhnev expressing their concern about 1975 Peace Prize winner Andrei Sakharov, Monitor contributor Chris Mosey writes.

The telegram asked Mr. Brezhnev to do all he could to improve the conditions under which Dr. Sakharov is forced to live in the Soviet Union.

''Such an action would be an important step in returning to normal relations between East and West,'' the telegram said.

Medicine prizewinner Roger W. Sperry, of the United States, was the only one who did not sign the telegram. He was unavailable for immediate comment.
