Burger, Nixon discussed cases, Ehrlichman writes

December 11, 1981

Chief Justice Warren Burger discussed pending Supreme Court cases with President Nixon, according to the Washington Post. Quoting galley proofs of former White House aide John Ehrlichman's memoirs, the paper reports that Justice Burger offered to leave his position early so Mr. Nixon could appoint another chief justice ''to carry out the Nixon mandate far beyond the Nixon and Burger years.''

A Supreme Court spokesman said it's the general rule of the justices not to comment on such allegations. It is considered improper for justices to discuss pending issues outside the judicial process.

The Post quoted former Attorney General John Mitchell as disputing the allegations.
