Polish union leader goes to Warsaw to see primate

December 10, 1981

Solidarity union chief Lech Walesa arrived in Warsaw for crisis talks with Roman Catholic primate Jozet Glemp amid what Solidarity called a mounting official Polish campaign against the union.

The meeting came after the church's urging parliament to reject Communist Party demands that the government be granted emergency powers, including a strike ban.

Solidarity leaders were to meet Friday and Saturday to vote on a resolution threatening a general strike if a law granting such powers were passed. But in an apparent move to avoid such confrontation, neither of two parliament sessions announced in the coming two weeks has such a bill on the agenda. On Tuesday it was disclosed that Archbishop Glemp sent a letter to all parliament members warning them not to pass such a bill, for the good of the country.
