Coal putting to sea again - as fuel for coal carrier

November 24, 1981

You may not have noticed, but it's been 25 years since a coal-powered ship was built in the United States. Monitor staff writer Susan Garland reports that coal-stokers will back on the seas in 1983, however, when a 655-foot coal-burning, coal-carrying ship being built here for the New England Electric Company is completed. The $60 million vessel is part of an oil-to-coal conversion project involving the ship and three power plants which aims to save 12 million barrels of oil and $169 million a year.
