Reagan plans to veto spending compromise

November 23, 1981

President Reagan planned to veto the stopgap government funding compromise reached Sunday afternoon by US House and Senate negotiators trying to piece together a bill to keep government operations going.

At this writing Sunday, Budget Director David Stockman said the President would not sign the compromise bill, which was necessary to restart spending that stopped when the funding ran out at midnight Friday.

GOP sources said an effort would be made to recommit the bill to the conference committee for more work, with a simple 15-day extension of federal spending authority in the meantime.
