Massachusetts to join states banning bottles

November 17, 1981

Massachusetts has become the eighth state to outlaw no-deposit beer and soft drink containers, Monitor correspondent George B. Merry reports. The ''bottle bill'' cleared its final hurdle Monday when the state Senate voted 29 to 10 to override a veto of the legislation by Gov. Edward J. King. The House last week similarly overrode the governor.

The new law, which takes effect in January 1983, requires 5- and 10-cent deposits on beverage bottles and cans.
