On Polish strike scene: sit-in against a sit-in

November 17, 1981

Polish strikes took on a puzzling new look Monday when a group of activist youths started a sit-in to protest another sit-in by farmers. Meanwhile, tens of thousands of students staged another strike, and a strike by newsstand operators spread.

A Solidarity trade union spokesman said it was the first time he had ever heard of a strike against a strike.

Meanwhile, Solidarity negotiating teams arrived in Warsaw for major talks with the government as arguments flared over how the communists and the free trade union movement could join together in a national front. Solidarity is asking for free election of government officials.
