Original London Bridge believed to be found

November 16, 1981

Archaeologists digging 30 feet underground believe they have discovered the original London Bridge built nearly 2,000 years ago by Roman conquerors. A team has worked for 10 months on the banks of the River Thames to locate the oak foundations, which are only about 50 yards from the present London Bridge. The oak is thought to be part of the Roman wharf system.

Archaeologists say London was one of the great centers of the Roman Empire, and the bridge was the center of the Romans' plan to develop the area in AD 43.
