GIs off to Egypt to begin Middle East war games

November 9, 1981

US forces flew to Egypt for war games designed to demonstrate an ability to back President Reagan's pledge to support Middle East friends against outside threats.

Exercise Bright Star 82 opens next Saturday with joint US-Egyptian operations. Similar exercises are scheduled for later this month and in December in the Sudan, Somalia, and Oman.

Much larger in scope and size than last year's war games in Egypt, Bright Star 82 is to show how quickly American forces could respond to a threat to the region's vital oil fields.
