Correction; Bread dough ornaments

November 3, 1981

On September 28, in the Arts and Crafts special, there was a recipe for making bread dough Christmas tree ornaments. The recipe called for 1/2 cup of cornstarch, 2/3 cup of water, and 1 cup of salt; the cornstarch to be mixed with half of the water until dissolved; the salt to be heated in a pan with the rest of the water until bubbly. Then the two were to be combined, stirred until stiff , then kneaded to form a stiff dough.

Some readers have reported difficulty in getting the dough stiff enough to knead. It is important to add the cornstarch mixture to the salt - not the reverse - as soon as the briney mixture is removed from the burner. If the mixture does not solidify quickly, try returning the pan to the burner for just a minute. The dough, of course, will then be quite hot; let it cool for a while before you start to knead.
