Unity between 2 Irelands to be explored in London

November 2, 1981

A plan to set up a forum for contact between Britain and a divided Ireland will be studied at an Anglo-Irish summit meeting in London this month, informed sources said.

The proposed Anglo-Irish council is widely seen in Ireland as a steppingstone to the eventual peaceful unity of the Irish Republic and war-torn British-ruled Northern Ireland.

The plan will be discussed when Irish Prime Minister Garret FitzGerald comes to London for a meeting this month with Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher.
