Rumors of a US recession were further confirmed Thursday by a 2.7 percent drop in the index of leading economic indicators, used by the government to determine future trends. That was the biggest drop since April of last year and the sixth monthly decline this year.

The Labor Department reports that productivity of US workers fell at an annual rate of 2.2 percent during the quarter ended in September.
