One killed in bomb blast in London; IRA blamed

October 27, 1981

A bomb exploded in a hamburger bar in the fashionable Oxford Street shopping district Monday - the latest in a rash of bombings and bomb scares believed set up by the Irish Republican Army. At least one person was reported killed in the blast. Rush hour traffic was described as chaotic as police closed nearby streets, subway stations, and shops.

Two bombs in the past 16 days in the British capital - both claimed as the work of the outlawed IRA - killed two people and crippled a Royal Marines general.
