October 26, 1981

Alberto Salazar won the New York City Marathon Sunday for the second consecutive year in a world record time of 2 hours, 8 minutes, 13 seconds. An estimated 1 million spectators lining the 26-mile, 385-yard route cheered the Cuban native as he shattered the 2:09.1 world record set a year ago by Gerard Nijboer of Holland.

Allison Roe of New Zealand smashed the women's world record when she finished in 2 hours, 25 minutes and 29 seconds.
