Polish textile workers strike for more food

October 15, 1981

Some 12,000 textile workers struck for more food Wednesday in Zyrardow, south of Warsaw, as the government and Solidarity sought a platform for talks to defuse nationwide tensions over shortages.

The protest in Zyardow was the focal point of a two-day-old strike wave that brought stoppages and threats of stoppages in about a dozen regions, mainly in central Poland.

The government, faced with the threat of a token national strike later this month, called last night for Solidarity and the other unions to take part in joint anticrisis talks.
