Khamenei takes power in Iran as executions mount

October 14, 1981

Hojatolislam Sayed Ali Khamenei was sworn in Tuesday as Iran's third President, succeeding Muhammad Ali Rajai, who was assassinated six weeks ago, Tehran Radio reported.

Meanwhile, an Amnesty International report indicates more than 1,800 people have been executed in Iran since the overthrow last June of Abolhassan Bani-Sadr. It said this figure was more than the number executed in the rest of the world put together during the same period.
