Iraq admits Abadan move, playing down importance

September 30, 1981

Iraq conceded its forces had withdrawn across a river near the strategic Iranian oil refining city of Abadan amid fierce fighting with Iranian forces, but denied the move had military significance.

An Iraqi military spokesman, quoted by the official Iraqi News Agency, said the forces had abandoned their positions on the east bank of the Karun River in southern Iran because they were no longer of strategic value.
