Another IRA convict joins hunger strike

September 22, 1981

Jailed Irish Republican Army guerrilla James Devine began a hunger strike Monday, bringing to eight the number of men fasting for prison reforms, a government spokesman said. Ten guerrillas have already starved themselves to death in the hunger strike campaign.

Meanwhile, a Protestant extremist group that shot and killed a Belfast hairdresser it claimed was an IRA informer said it had a hit list of other suspected informers.
