Walesa in line for Nobel peace Prize . . . maybe

September 18, 1981

Lech Walesa, leader of the Polish free trade union Solidarity, is a leading contender for this year's Nobel Peace Prize to be awarded Oct. 14. However, reports Monitor contributor Chris Mosey, the feeling of sources close to the Nobel committee was that Walesa could prove too controversial a choice and that a less provocative but equally worthy candidate would be Brandt Commission, whose report on the division of the world's economic resources led to the North-South summit scheduled in Mexico this autumn.

Nobel committee director Jakob Sverdrup confirmed that Walesa was a candidate , along with British Foreign Secretary Lord Carrington who helped negotiate the Rhodesian settlement.
