The barren tree triumphs

September 17, 1981

The barren tree triumphs because of the bird that comes to perch on its topmost high starkly shattered limb. In color and song the bird is emphatic and strong. The woodsman who views it from his chair on his porch of evenings speaks no word of saws or axes. He likes it there, alive as leaves, making its pertinent comment against the sky.
