Bolivian names Cabinet, pledges new democracy

September 9, 1981

Bolivia's new head of state, Gen. Celso Torrelio Villa, has announced his Cabinet and pledged to restore democracy within three years. General Torrelio was sworn in after being chosen by the ruling military junta, which took power from Gen. Garcia Meza Aug. 3 after a military rebellion forced him to resign.

Since General Garcia seized power in a coup almost a year ago, overthrowing the democratic caretaker government of Lidia Gueiler, Bolivia's economic crisis has deepened and the country has suffered international isolation. The new Cabinet includes many members who served in the previous government.
