US to go on selling arms to Taiwan, senator says

September 1, 1981

Washington will continue to sell arms to Taiwan despite protests from Peking, US Sen. John Glenn asserted at the end of a two-day visit here. The Ohio Democrat, a member of the Senate Subcommittee on East Asia and Pacific Affairs, said he told officials in China last week that Taiwan's defense needs were a matter of concern to the United States. On possible arms sales to China, Senator Glenn said that Congress was aware of Peking's request for the purchase of 87 items and that the matter would be heard next month.
