Indians refusing to leave their camp in Balck Hills

Dakota American Indian Movement leaders and their families refused to leave their camp in the sacred Black Hills in defiance of a Forest Service order to get out by Sept. 8.

In April, 60 Dakota AIM cmapers moved into the 800-acre Black Hills National Forest, sacred to the Lakota Sioux tribe. They were denied permits to build 83 structures there, including a school and ceremonial buildings, on grounds it would disrupt public uses of the Black Hills.

Habitants of the campt argue that the 1868 Fort Laramie Treaty "guarantees the entire Black Hills region as the heart and center of the Lakota Nation forever."
