Leader of attempted coup in The Gambia is arrested

August 28, 1981

Kukoi Samba Sanyang, leader of last month's attempted coup in The Gambia, has been arrested in Guinea-Bissau with nine other rebels, Senegal's government newspaper, Le Soleil, reported. The Gambian government has made no formal announcement on the arrest.

Mr. Sanyang led rebels who set up a short-lived Marxist government in The Gambia, in which more than 500 people were killed. The revolt was crushed within days by Senegalese troops called in by President Dawda Jawara, who was in Britain when the rebels struck.
